Interviewed by Evan Connor / photos by Emma O’Brien

Evan: How long have you lived in the area?
Jerry: 66 years.

Evan: What’s a fond memory you have of living here?
Jerry: Being on the river with the dogs, playing in the greenfields where Golden Island used to be, cycling down to Friary Lane and to the Shannon for swimming.

Evan: Have you seen this community come back from hard times before?
Jerry: In the 70s and 80s there was little to no work and lots of emigration but after a few years, the area came back stronger.

Evan: What are some things that have helped you through lockdown and what brings you joy?
Jerry: My grandchildren and bringing the dogs for a walk.

Evan: What does community mean to you? What sort of things are you doing now to stay connected to your community and family?
Jerry: Looking out for one another, through difficult times and to make someone’s day worthwhile.

Evan: What message do you want to share for yourself and this community in 10 years time?
Jerry: Through hard times look out for one another and don’t forget about the best chicken curry in town!

Pictured below are images from Jerry’s shoot with photographer Emma O’Brien, featuring his lovely dog.
