Marie Laverty
Interviewed by Sophie Thomas / photos by Malcolm McGettigan
Sophie: How long have you lived in the area?
Marie: 48 years.
Sophie: What’s a fond memory you have of living here?
Marie: We had very nice neighbours and relatives living in the area and children would play in and around the house estate.
Sophie: Have you seen this community come back from hard times before?
Marie: Yes, like in the 60s and the 70s when there were little jobs for people who were trying to get back on their feet.
Sophie: What are some things that have helped you through lockdown and what brings you joy?
Marie: Taking part in courses on zoom, chair aerobics and renovating the house.
Sophie: What does community mean to you? What sort of things are you doing now to stay connected to your community and family?
Marie: I have 5 family members in the area and volunteering helps me to stay connected.
Sophie: What message do you want to share for yourself and this community in 10 years time?
Marie: Remember the people who were here before and who made a difference in the community.
Sophie’s experience with the project: “I think it was a fun and enjoyable experience. I enjoyed connecting with and elderly person in my area.”
Pictured below is the drawing Sophie did as her creative response to her interview with Marie – children flying kites against a beautiful sky. Also shown are images from Marie’s shoot with Malcolm McGettigan.
