Lucy Devitt
Interviewed by Emily Mahon Devitt / photographer Madeline Mulqueen
Emily: How long have you lived in your area?
Lucy: 47 years.
Emily: What’s a fond memory you have of living in your area?
Lucy: We had a small farm of 14 acres. I raised my four kids who now have their own homes and families. I also raised animals including lambs and a donkey. Lovely memories of good health and happiness here.
Emily: Have you seen this community come back from hard times before?
Lucy: I haven’t really. In the past difficulties were due to bad weather in Winter. It would snow and animals got trapped in snow drifts. Covid is more difficult, everything is shut. It is hard not being able to be with family members in the hospital when they die. But here in Ireland we are very thankful that we don’t have that much torments or hardships. In other parts of the world they have suffered extreme drought, storms, earthquakes, famine and war. There are refugees who risk their lives to get to Ireland.
Emily: What are some things that have helped you through lockdown and what brings you joy?
Lucy: Last year was very exciting as we had two babies on the way. Two grandkids were born which brought us joy in September and October. One daughter was living in The Hague at the time, so we video called every day. Watching daily mass on the TV and on the computer with a candle lighting in my prayer space. I also baked a lot of scones and apple tarts. My weekly Tesco deliveries were delightful. Of course, I also enjoyed reading some books in the glorious sunshine which we had last Summer and Autumn.
Emily: What message do you want to leave for yourself and your community in 10 years?
Lucy: First of all, I would hope please God to maybe be alive in 10 years time. I would hope that I was a down to earth person and I would hope that my principles would shine through my family. In the meantime, I hope to enjoy my good health and be out everyday for some fresh air for my lungs.
